Tasting Notes
Our Single Vineyard 2010 Reserve Pinot Gris has been produced from our Brookdale Vineyard in the Omaka Valley of Marlborough, the spiritual home of Toi Toi.
Made from low cropping vines, the resultant wine is both vibrant and intense.
Pale straw in colour, the nose is dominated by ripe pear and peach aromas, with hints of acacia honey. The palate is rich, ripe and intense, showing classic spice and pear flavours, all supported by cleansing acidity. The finish is long and textural staying fresh and lively. This is a top quality, absolutely delicious Pinot Gris.
Food Matching
This wine is an excellent accompaniment with pork and chicken, salads and spicy dishes. Try it with poached Asian style chicken broth, with garlic, ginger, star anise, chili and noodles. A wonderful combination!
Viticulture and Winemaking
The 2010 vintage in Marlborough will go down as one of the very best in recent history. Flowering and fruit set took place in relatively cool conditions, restricting yields to a little below average in most varieties and this, coupled with a slightly cooler than normal summer, resulted in fruit of exceptional quality and depth of flavour. Perfect conditions during harvest allowed us to pick fruit in perfect condition, certainly some of the cleansest fruit seen in Marlborough for many a year.
The grapes were hand harvested to minimise colour pick up, then destemmed and lightly pressed with minimal skin contact. Only the free run juice was used which was racked with light lees to the fermentation vessels and fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks with selected yeast strains to preserve the inherent fruit flavours. The fermentation was stopped with a small amount of residual sugar to balance the natural acidity. Following fermentation the wine was lees stirred for three months to enhance texture and complexity before maturation and bottling.
