Toi Toi wins Sauvignon Blanc Trophy at Sydney International Wine Competition 2019

Toi Toi Marlborough Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2018 was awarded the Perpetual Trophy at the 39th Sydney International Wine Competition 2019 this week.

Owners Kevin and Sara Joyce say “Our family winery is very thrilled to be awarded the Trophy for the Best Sauvignon Blanc of Show at the Sydney International, as it is the only international wine show that is judged with food.  This is testament to our team’s dedication to make food friendly and approachable wines that are best enjoyed with friends and family. A big vote of thanks to our viticulturists, winemakers and all our team that have made this award possible.”

The 13 strong judging team included five Masters of Wine and a range of wine educators, winemakers and wine enthusiasts that tasted 2,000 wines over 5 days at Wentworth Falls NSW.

The Sydney International Wine Competition is a food oriented wine show that is now in it’s 39th year.  The show originated to bring innovative winemakers together, who were trialling new cool climate varieties, and to see which wines would complement well with food.  The premise of this show has always been to focus on the idea that wine is usually best consumed with food. When food and wine are enjoyed together, they can potentially enhance the sensory perception of each other. The chosen dish this year for Sauvignon Blanc was Asparagus and Mushroom Risotto, as presented by chef Michael Manners.

Judge Dr Ken Dobler, who has been on the panel for 13 years, had this to say about the wine “Attractive pale straw colour. Effusive nose with aromas of guava and passionfruit. Interesting palate with those tropical flavours and a pleasing clean finish. Lovely density of flavour. Food accentuates the lovely primary fruit characters of the wine.”

The Toi Toi Marlborough Reserve  Sauvignon Blanc 2018 has been selected from the very best parcels of fruit grown from the Toi Toi vineyards in the lower and upper Wairau and Omaka Valley’s of Marlborough.

Toi Toi Winemaker Tim Adams says “We dodged a bullet with the rains around harvest and held our nerve to harvest the grapes at optimum flavours and maturity. It was a difficult growing season but we were very pleased with the work done in the vineyards to provide us with such premium fruit. One of our parcels was a first pick vineyard right on the banks of the Wairau River. Full of river stones which accounts for a little flintiness in the wine and the typical citrus, grapefruit, lime and gooseberry characters come from our Brookdale vineyard in the Omaka Valley”

One of the family principles of Toi Toi is Kaitiaki – guardians of the land for future generations. All Toi Toi vineyards are sustainably grown and audited through Sustainable Winegrowing NZ and we are founding members of Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW), an incorporated society set up to protect the quality, authenticity and integrity of Marlborough sauvignon blanc. The wines must be made 100% from Marlborough sauvignon blanc, bottled in NZ and not over cropped above 15 tonnes per hectare
